Equine Ophthalmology Consults

Dr. Tara Richards is available for equine ophthalmology consults, minor procedures as well as surgeries at 3 locations in southern Ontario. The services available differ by location. Please contact us for more information to appropriately direct your referral.

Please note:  Appropriate referral from your family veterinarian is required for all of our services.  Please have your veterinarian reach out to us to schedule a consult or surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Both teleconsultation as well as in person examination options are available for equine ophthalmic cases. Referral is needed for in person examinations and should be initiated by your primary care veterinarian. There are 3 ship in locations for equine examinations: Mckee Pownall Schomberg, Mckee Pownall Campbellville and King Animal Hospital.  Please note, teleconsultations are vet-to-vet. Please see teleconsultation tab for more details.

  • Eye problems have the potential to progress to a sight threatening conditions over a short period of time. Therefore, if you notice any of the following clinical signs, an examination should be scheduled as soon as possible:

    • Squinting (holding the eye partially or fully closed)

    • Downward facing eyelashes

    • Discharge (lots of clear discharge or pus like discharge)

    • Cloudy eye

    • Obvious corneal defects

    • Eyelid lacerations

    • Sudden blindness

    • Blood inside or coming from the eye
