OFA Eye Examinations (CAER)
As a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, I am pleased to offer official Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) examinations. These critical screening exams are performed by diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) to assess dogs for the presence of observable hereditary ocular diseases.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
OFA eye certifications are a key part of the routine health screening practiced by responsible dog breeders to produce healthy puppies and make informed breeding decisions. The results are logged in the OFA's public database, providing valuable documentation for breeders and prospective owners.
-
The OFA eye exam is a screening procedure, not a comprehensive ocular health examination.
Preparation: Prior to the exam, dilating drops will be placed in your dog's eyes to enlarge the pupils. This typically takes 30-40 minutes.
Procedure: The patient will need to be accepting of our staff holding them for the examination. The examination itself involves using a slit lamp biomicroscope and indirect ophthalmoscopy to carefully examine the structures of the eye.
Identification: Permanent identification (microchip or tattoo) must be verifiable at the time of the exam.
Results: After the exam, the OFA CAER form online will be completed, indicating any specific conditions found. You will receive a digital copy of the form directly from the OFA.
Note: If a painful or vision-threatening abnormality is identified, a more comprehensive diagnostic exam may be recommended.
